Black! Asé is the first installation of the Black Burner Project and the first woman-led, BIPOC featured photography art installation at Burning Man. Black Burner Project was founded by photographer and lead artist, Erin Douglas, in 2018 with a mission to create radical diversity at Burning Man. Black! Asé consisted of two 30-ft high images of Black ‘burners’ that Erin photographed in previous years. As part of the 2022 honoraria program, the historic project received a grant from the Burning Man Project as part of its Diversity and Including initiative. Rigged with lighting and recorded audio of Black burners recounting their experience at Burning Man, the installation used 100% renewable power for the entirety of its 7 days of activation. Black! Asé was also host to several events, including the annual ‘Burners of color’ photo and performances by live musicians and DJs throughout the week.
